Roses
My current mini obsession is tree bark. I rode my bicycle to the Chicago Botanic Gardens today and spent the afternoon wandering around the cultivated grounds, every turning point a new discovery. I’m astounded by the vast knowledge and planning that goes into the design since many elements are anticipatory of growth and future seasons.
Having left my camera at home in consideration of weight whilst cycling, I still captured some captivating details with my phone.
The rose garden was in full, enchanting bloom, rich with fragrance and color. Though teenage me felt disdainful of the flowers due to their overuse in bouquets, I do remember picking out rose bushes as a child, pouring through catalogues and mesmerized by descriptions of unique perfumes and photos of coral, silvery pink, and lavender blossoms.
Admiring the roses reminded me of one of my favorite classic books: The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Later that evening, I plucked my copies off my bookcase and read the English translation.
Such clearly conveyed wisdom through a story that can be felt with the heart. Besides the English version, I was once gifted the original French version, and later I procured a beautifully illustrated Korean translation.
The lasting impact of the story reminds me that while we get caught up in the current trends and conflicts of the day, it’s the core, universal truths that are the most essential to return to as we decide how we will move through the world.
